If the fantastic menu isn’t enticing enough, you’ll want to stop by to see the 38-foot bus that owner Ernest Mendiola and his brother cook in. Once an old school bus, Mendiola and his family reconstructed it into the ultimate kitchen.
Mendiola and his brother got their passion for barbecue from a young age, “Growing up with four brothers; we were always taking care of each other and cooking for each other,” Mendiola said. ”We watched our dad barbecue, and we knew that was what we wanted to do long-term.”
The Bearded Turkey initially specialized in turkey legs alone. Now, the menu has something for everyone! They even serve creamy corn and mouth watering brisket macaroni and cheese to accompany your entrée.
“We do everything from smoked sweet potatoes to creamed corn,” Mendiola said. ”If there was a sleeper for us, it’s our smash burgers. Everyone always orders the barbecue, but once they get a taste of the smash burger – that makes them come every day.”
In fact, their smash burgers are so popular that Mendiola and his brother are considering opening a food truck in San Antonio for burgers alone!
The Bearded Turkey even got recognition from MySA and was nominated for the 2022 Readers’ Choice Awards in the food truck category.
“It was an awesome feeling (to get recognized,)” Mendiola said. ”We’ve been doing this for what feels like a long time, but in reality, it’s only been a short amount of time, especially to get an accolade like that.”
